How to get from Medan Airport to BukitLawang

6 min read

Bukit Lawang sits on the eastern edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, about 90 kilometres from Medan as the crow flies. The drive, however, takes 4 to 5 hours: the last stretch winds through palm oil plantations and villages on a road that keeps drivers humble. Here is every option for getting here, with real prices (checked June 2026) and the practical tips we give our own guests.

Option 1: private car with driver

The most comfortable choice, and the one we recommend if you land in the afternoon or travel with more than two people. A driver waits for you in the arrivals hall, helps with your bags and takes you door-to-door to your guesthouse in Bukit Lawang. You leave when you land, not when a van happens to fill up.

Expect to pay around Rp 700.000 (roughly €34) per car, not per person. The drive takes 4 to 5 hours including a short break.

Option 2: shared transport

A shared taxi here is simply the same private car with the cost split between travellers going the same way: Rp 700.000 divided by however many of you share it, so Rp 235.000 each with three. We match guests who arrive on the same day whenever we can. It is the most affordable comfortable option, with one catch: departure times shift a little to fit everyone, so you may wait a bit at the airport for your car-mates.

If your flight lands in the morning, this is usually painless. If you land after 14:00, think twice: a long wait plus a 5-hour drive means arriving in the dark, and the final stretch of road is much more pleasant in daylight.

Tips from the team

  • Try to land before 15:00 so you arrive in Bukit Lawang before dark.
  • Buy a local SIM card at the airport: coverage on the road is decent and you can message your driver or guesthouse.
  • Withdraw cash in Medan or at the airport. ATMs in Bukit Lawang are limited and sometimes empty.
  • The last hour of road is bumpy. If you get carsick, sit in front and keep motion sickness tablets in your daypack, not your suitcase.
  • Travelling onward after your trek? The same drivers do Berastagi, Lake Toba and Medan city. Arrange it with us a day ahead.
